People are inherently relational beings. Being in conflict with others—or even within ourselves—can lead to hurt and stress. I work together with clients to explore thoughts and feelings in a way that contributes to greater knowledge of self and health in both internal and external relationships.
I work with adults, young children, and couples. My work with children is informed by child-centered play therapy. With adults, I often draw on psychodynamic depth therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to address issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, relationship issues, spiritual issues, and family of origin issues. I also have a special interest in working with women on issues related to motherhood, pregnancy, and infertility. In my work with clients, I see each person as an individual and honor the many factors—such as race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexuality, and gender-- that make you you.
Counseling is my second career. In my first career as a global public health researcher, I led research studies in both the US and Sub-Saharan Africa on how people make decisions related to health, as well as studies on sexual and reproductive health, and pregnancy. This background informs my work as a counselor, bringing both a strong appreciation of other cultures and a commitment to using evidence-based methods in counseling.
I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate in North Carolina. I hold a Masters of Arts in Christian Counseling – Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary-Charlotte. I also hold a Masters of Science in Public Health and a PhD in Maternal and Child Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as a Bachelors of Arts from Duke University.
